While most of the attention on this past week’s NFL Draft was on the athletes actually taken during the three-day, there were several in-state standouts who were signed as undrafted free agents after the last pick was taken.
Six Bulldogs and five Rebels have already signed. The Bulldogs signing were Jaquarius Landrews signed with the New York Giants, Leo Lewis with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Isaiah Zuber with the New England Patriots, Stephen Guidry with the Dallas Cowboys, Chauncey Rivers with the Baltimore Ravens and Daryl Rivers with the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Ole miss Rebels did not have any players drafted but did have players sign as free agents. Defensive Tackle Benito Jones signed with the Miami Dolphins. Running Back Scottie Phillips signed with the Houston Texans. Defensive Lineman Josiah Coatney signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Defensive back Miles Hartsfield signed with the Carolina Panthers. And Defensive back Jalen Julius signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Draft was conducted in a much different manner this year, as it was the very first virtual NFL Draft, due to social distancing. There were Five Mississippi State Bulldogs drafted. Bulldog Linebacker Willie Gay Jr was selected 63rd overall to the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. Defensive Back Cameron Dantzler was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings with the 89th pick. Offensive lineman Tyre Phillips was selected 106th to the Baltimore Ravens. Quarterback Tommy Stevens was drafted to the New Orleans Saints with the 240th pick. And with the 249th pick the Minnesota Vikings selected linebacker Brian Cole II.
