Isaac Miller has been a student at Grace Christian School for four years, but he has been playing baseball for the Eagles for five. He was on the team as an eighth grader while being home schooled, then became a student as a freshman.
“I liked the atmosphere, I liked the people, so I decided I might as well start coming to school,” Miller said. So he took the 30-minute drive from his home in Macon to the school every day until classes were halted after four games this season.
“It's a bummer. It's sad,” he said. “I love baseball and I wish we could have gotten more out of this year.”
Miller played first and caught last year as a junior, but is behind the plate full time this year.
“I like it a lot. It's fun,” he said of the position. “There's a lot of responsibilities of being a catcher.”
He also realizes the responsibilities of being a senior. “Being one of the more experienced baseball players with a lot of younger kids, I have to sort of step up sometimes.”
One of his fans is Jason Morgan, the headmaster. “He is a fantastic representative of our school. He is an elite student. He has an absolutely energetic personality. The thing I will remember most about him, if not the smile on his face, it's how hard he worked to make our school a better place every day.”
Morgan said Miller has put in more than 100 hours of community service this school year “Any time I need work done, he's the guys I go to. If I need advice on something and I want the students' perspective, he's one the guys I go to. When he graduates in a month, I am going to feel like I'm losing a body part. He is so valuable.”
In the event that the season is resumed Miller has been attempting to keep in shape working out in his back yard. “I'm trying to keep my senses sharp, doing what I can.”
If the season does not resume, it is probably the end of his days playing organized baseball. He does not expect to play at the next level.
Miller has not made a decision, but would like to go to a junior college, possibly East Central, then on to Mississippi State to pursue a degree in electrical engineering.
