The Grace Christian School Eagles boys basketball team completed this past week undefeated, defeating both Columbus Christian Academy and Meridian Homeschool.. The Eagles defeated CCA 52-38. “We had a real balanced attack,” said head coach Jason Morgan, as Bonner Brownlee put together a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Asher Hogue and Jacob Phillips both added eight points each, and Grayson Skelton put together an impressive game with six assists and five steals, to go along with seven points. Morgan praised the defensive efforts of Brownlee, Skelton, and Phillips in this game. Later in the week, the Eagles defeated Meridian Homeschool 47-38. Brownlee scored 23 points, while Phillips added 16 in the victory. The Eagles took care of the basketball well, only having nine turnovers. “We did a much better job taking care of the ball,” says Morgan, “When we take care of the ball, we are a much better team.” After this week, the Eagles improved to a 7-1 record, only losing to Meridian Homeschool, earlier in the season. Morgan believes his team is moving in the right direction. The GCS Lady Eagles had a rough past week losing both games. The Lady Eagles took a tough loss to CCA 58-8, with Grace Marie Holdman scoring four. “They pressed us for four quarters,” says Lady Eagles coach Talor Troyer. She was not disappointed in the effort however as she says the Lady Eagles did not give up. “My girls never quit playing,” says Troyer. Later in the week, the Lady Eagles lost to Meridian Homeschool 28-18, with Carolyn Hogue scoring 11 points. The Lady Eagles are experiencing the injury bug, with three players injuring their ankle in the game. Coach Troyer said that two players were able to play through injuries, but were not 100 percent. “We were able to break down their defense,” says Troyer, although the Lady Eagles struggled to make shots. Next week GCS has a busy week, hosting three home games against Columbus Christian Academy, Hebron Christian, and Amory Christian Academy. The Amory Christian matchup will be the conference opener for the Eagles. “We are all really excited,” says Coach Troyer. CHS HOOPS NOTE Choctaw County's boys and girls basketball teams were unable to play scheduled games with Winona last week because the girls team had a couple of positive tests for COVID-19. The Lady Chargers are under quarantine and cannot play or practice until after Thanksgiving.
