There was plenty to celebrate for Eupora Lady Eagle basketball fans closing out the 2020 school year as the team has seen a major improvement from last season to now.
Last season, Eupora had just one win. The Lady Eagles struggled to get the job done on either end of the court and it was a tough season to endure as the numbers were also extremely low on the team. Under new leadership with first-year head coach Cody Ramer, those numbers increased this season. The bench is filling up and the play on the floor as improved mightily.
Before Class 2A, Region 2 play even begins this week, Eupora is coming into the new year with a 6-2 record with both losses coming to French Camp Academy. There’s been a mixture of veteran and young production that has made it an exciting start to the year and they’re looking to keep it rolling.
“We’re healthy and that’s the most important thing. We haven’t had any players in contact with anybody or catch (COVID-19) so we’re blessed with that right now,” Ramer said. “Practice has been going good and we’re trying to prepare for Calhoun City and East Webster.”
Calhoun City tipped off the district play on Tuesday in a game that went down after press time. The Lady Wildcats are the team to beat in Region 2 year in and year out and it begins an uptick in the competition for the Lady Eagles.
It’s already been a much-improved season for Eupora with five more wins than last year already, but the schedule gets tougher. After Calhoun City, Eupora plays East Webster on consecutive days starting on Friday night in a district game. Saturday will be considered a non-district matchup but it also represents a big opportunity for Ramer and company to show just how much better they are.
“Those are two tough teams in our district so if we can pull this out that’ll be really good,” Ramer said. “I don’t want to base everything on this week. This is the part where we need to grow as a team and stick together.”
The boys’ team will also be getting in on the action against Calhoun City and East Webster this week. They enter the game 0-2 on the year having played a limited schedule due to football playoffs as well as a COVID-19quarantine. Coach Ross Robinson was unavailable for comment this week to update his team.
