Patriots bounce back with win over Oak Hill Academy

Winston County Journal
It was a “get right” Friday night for the Winston Academy Patriots after back-to-back losses and they got it right, and then some.
The Patriots racked up over 300 yards rushing as Omar Scott and his offensive crew scored the most points in a game since 2015 with a 54-21 blowout win at Oak Hill Academy. It was a game that the Pats had to have following losses to Tri-County Academy and Clinton Christian. Both of those schools were tremendous challenges, but those losses could have very easily had the team playing with their heads down. They came out and fought instead.
The Raiders scored on the first possession of the ball game and then the Patriots came alive.
“They came out and they responded. We wanted them to play with great effort and execute at a high level and after the first possession we responded,” Byrd said. “They came out and had a great week of practice. The kids got to enjoy it on Friday night and that’s a good thing.”
The victory improved the Pats to 4-3 on the season and they sit at 0-2 in 2-4A as the season is beginning to wind down. It makes for three must-win games to close out the regular season for the Patriots.
WA currently is still one of the top rated Class 4A squads due in the Power Point system and wins the next three weeks will go a long way. That starts tonight as the team hosts a Central Hinds Academy team that is right behind the Patriots in the rankings. The Cougars are also 4-3 on the year but do have a district win over St. Aloysius. They enter Friday night’s game coming off of a loss to Bayou Academy and they’ve also lost to Canton Academy and Bowling Green in Louisiana.
“You’ve got to treat every game like it’s a playoff game. Every game factors in the same with this Power Point system,” Byrd said. “You have to treat every game like it’s a playoff game and that fourth spot will go to whoever has the highest Power Points.
“(Central Hinds) is good. They’ve played a good schedule and beat some good teams. They’re well-coached and will be big up front. The quarterback is a good athlete and operates well in the system. Defense is very sound and tackle well. If you let this Homecoming stuff get in the way, they’ll make a mess of your birthday cake.”
