While many teams were taking Thanksgiving week off completely, the Winston Academy Patriots were on the floor trying to get better.
WA went to Starkville Academy last Monday to take on the Volunteers in basketball action but came away with a couple of losses.
A 62-40 loss for the boys team was the third in as many games for WA.
“They put some stuff on us like a 1-3-1 (press) that we didn’t know how to get over. We just couldn’t attack it and we haven’t worked enough on it,” coach Gary Beals said. “We took some bad shots but a lot of that was on me. I feel good, if we can ever get going. There’s just so much going on during the Holidays. Give us two or three more weeks and I think we’ll be alright.”
The girls team fell to 3-5 on the year after their loss to the Lady Vols and they’re working to figure out their issues in the low post. Beals said he’s still searching for players to produce offensively to help out his guards.
“We just don’t have an inside game. We’ve got great guard play, but we just don’t have anything going on in the post. We got killed with second chance points against Starkville,” Beals said. “We’ve got to get better at game situations, too.”
This week, WA took on Columbus Christian on Monday and Kirk Academy came to town on Tuesday. Both games took place after press time.
Next week the two teams will start off district play by hosting Canton Academy at home on Tuesday. The teams will go to New Site on Thursday for a huge test, play Winona Christian on Friday night and then host the Winston Academy Classic on Saturday.
