It’s district tournament time for the Louisville Wildcats and both teams are ready for an exciting week of Class 4A, Region 3 action in Caledonia.
The Lady Wildcats enter as the only undefeated team in district play on either side and LHS is playing some dominating basketball since the new year.
After beginning the season 6-8, the Lady Wildcats won seven-straight games since the beginning of January and ran through Region 3 with a perfect 7-0 record. The defending state champions lost to Amory to close out the regular season, but they’re geared up to make a run in postseason ball as the district tournament began this week.
“I think the biggest thing with the girls is maturity,” head coach Mitchell McCurry said. “They matured a lot over the year and they have a lot of confidence. They believe in themselves and they’re starting to hit their stride. If they go out and take care of business, they’ll be fine.”
As the number one seed, the Lady Cats (13-9) had a chance to rest to start the week and received a bye in the first round of the tournament. LHS played Kosciusko on Tuesday in the semifinals. A win would put them in the championship game on Friday night at 7 p.m.
Boys
The Wildcat boys team is healthy and at full strength for the first time this season and it’s already showing.
After wrapping up the four-seed with a 66-50 win over Greenwood last week, the Wildcats took on Houston in the first round of the tournament and blew away the Hilltoppers 74-40 on Monday night. The win improved the team to 7-12 overall but it doesn’t really indicate how dangerous they can be at this point with a fresh team.
“I think we settled pretty good. We finally got healthy and it’s the first time having our team healthy all year,” McCurry said. “We did a really good job at the end of the schedule. Every game that we’ve lost has been close. Any boys team can win the district at any time so that’s our mindset this week to go in there believing we can win.”
The Wildcats had to take on the No. 1 seeded Whippets on Tuesday night in a game that went final after press time. In the previous two games, Kosciusko prevailed 63-58 and 46-32.
