Jeb Sisk leads by example in whatever avenue he pursues.
An anchor on both sides of the line for the East Webster Wolverines, Sisk helped lead the team into its first season in Class 3A. It ended with a 10-3 season and a third-round trip to the playoffs where EWHS lost to eventual state champions Winona.
Shortly after finishing out his senior season, Sisk would transition to the weight room. It’s a place that has grown to be a second home for a player that has put in the work to be a factor on the field.
Powerlifting coach Brennan Haynes has watched Sisk develop as a football player, but he’s also worked with him in the weight room. Last Saturday, he got a chance to take him to Jackson to compete in the Class 3A state championship and Sisk came away with the gold as a state champion.
“I knew we had a chance going into it to get him a state title. He’s just such a good kid that does what you ask,” Haynes said. “Even at football he works hard and is such a great kid. He had one of the worst meets that he had in three years in North State, and he still tied for first. Saturday, everything went as smoothly as possible. It unfolded better than we could imagine.”
Sisk was going up against some stiff competition at the event, but he still put together one of his best days.
Competing in the 308-pound group, Sisk would lift a total of 1,470 pounds and he won the championship by 60 pounds. The events consist of squats, bench press and deadlift and Sisk took care of business. It was the fourth state championship for EWHS since 2015.
While Haynes has seen others come through and win it all, this one felt even more special because of the amount of time and effort that Sisk has put in perfecting his craft. Haynes was proud to see his hard work come to fruition and end with him standing on the podium as a state champ.
“There are two different types of powerlifters. There’s the guy that has advantages from birth and then there’s the guy that works and works and works,” Haynes said. “I want all of them to win, but it’s extra special when it’s the guys like Jeb that grind and work for it even more.”
