Coach Tyrone Shorter has put together a Hall of Fame resume in just over a decade as a head coach and he’s adding to it this year.
In the middle of an 18-game winning streak at Louisville and a quest for a third state championship at the school, Shorter is being recognized nationally. Last week saw Shorter receive one of the highest honors of his career as the Under Armor All-American game has selected him to be part of the coaching staff.
Shorter couldn’t help but feel humbled by the selection – something he didn’t think was possible even after his nomination.
“It means a lot. I’m not just representing Louisville High School and my coaching staff, I’m representing the entire state of Mississippi,” Shorter said. “It’s a huge honor and I cherish it. When I got the phone call, I couldn’t believe it. I knew that I was up for it but I never thought I would get it. I was ecstatic.”
Over the course of the last 14 seasons, Shorter has been one of the most impressive coaches in the entire state of Mississippi. He has coached Noxubee County and Louisville to a combined six state championships and won 10 division titles. His record of 156-38 is impressive, but he carries an even more impressive 63-3 district mark.
During his career at Noxubee, Shorter was one of just two coaches that had won 100 games. He finished second in school history behind his former mentor and boss MC Miller who was 122-58-1. Shorter is fourth in the great history of Louisville football with 55 wins and can pass Mike Justice for third place with four more victories.
Shorter has joined Justice, Brad Peterson and MC Miller as coaches who have won two state titles at Louisville but one more would give him more rings than any head coach in school history. Another win will also break the tie with South Panola and West Point for a 12th state championship, provided neither team wins its own title this year.
Shorter will report to Orlando, Fla., on December 29 for the Under Armor practices and the game can be seen on ESPN on January 3.
