In the matter of just over a week’s time, Winston Academy won five games out of six and came from behind to win three of those.
The Patriots were going to have to do that again on the road last Thursday night but would come up just short at Ethel. Trailing 5-3 in the seventh inning, WA was able to get a run back but couldn’t get a couple of more as they fell 5-4 wot a solid Tiger team.
WA had six hits with a 3-for-4 night from Reed Yates as he had a double in the loss. Bryson Wright finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a triple and Holder Tidwell had two RBI without a hit.
Braxton Rone started the game for WA and surrendered five hits, four runs and three walks with seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Tidwell pitched the sixth and gave up a hit, run, walk and struck out one batter.
Prior to that defeat, WA took on Columbus Christian on Tuesday night and destroyed the Rams in a 33-0 game.
Entering division play this week, WA is 5-5 but winners of five of the last seven. The team began a three-game series in district play against a defending champion in Oak Hill Academy. The Raiders are coming off of a Class 4A state title last year and the Patriots have moved inside their division.
The first two games of the series were slated to take place on Wednesday as it moved back a day because of rain and the games were being played at WA as part of a double-header. Game three was set for Thursday night at Oak Hill.
The Patriots will play Bayou Academy on the road on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. and next week, WA will have a rematch with Ethel on Tuesday and host Lamar School on Thursday at Noon.
