Wins aren’t piling up, but Kylan Tippett’s Louisville team is slowly getting closer to where they need to be this basketball season.
The Wildcats had to spend a large part of the early schedule playing without several key pieces as LHS made the run to a Class 4A football state championship. That group is now on board and his team has been working to get into good shape as well as build chemistry within the team.
“We’re about 85% of where we want to be. We have to click a little bit as an offense,” Tippett said. “My defense is starting to click. I’ve got a rotation of guys that can come in and we never lose the tempo. Our football guys have to get back to where we want them to be conditioning wise. Our guys just have to mature where we want them, but I think the district is going to be really good for us.”
The Wildcats played Choctaw County last week as the Class 2A Chargers have been red hot in recent weeks. It was a tightly contested game, but the Chargers were able to come out on top, 60-53.
Despite the loss, Tippett liked how his team played hard in the game. Too many games this year have been lost in the fourth quarter, however. The Wildcats have lost four of the seven games by single digits and three-straight to McAdams, Columbus and CCHS.
“We’ve got to learn how to finish and close out games. We really had the (Choctaw County) game, we just didn’t close it out and that put us in a bad position,” Tippett said. “Our guys can compete with anybody which is a great thing, we just have to finish.”
The Wildcats are now 4-7 on the year but Tippett is seeing his team grow. This week, they play at McAdams and started on Tuesday taking on Yazoo County with a matchup with Scott Central coming on Wednesday. They’ll be in Cumberland for the East Webster Christmas Classic to play Pillow Academy on Thursday night and will take on Noxubee County on the road on Friday.
The Lady Wildcats continued their winning ways last week with a victory over CCHS to move to 11-2 on the year. Coach Mitchell McCurry didn’t return a phone call this week for further information.
