There was some good and some bad for the Winston Academy Lady Patriots on the volleyball court as the team continues to push towards a winning record.
After losing a match to a strong Amory Christian team, the Lady Patriots dismantled Hilcrest Christian for a 1-1 week at the helm.
The first match against Amory was a straight-sets defeat for WA, but that didn’t indicate just how competitive the match was. The Lady Pats were within striking distance in all three sets but fell just short three times. It started with a 25-22 loss in set one and then WA lost 25-17 and 25-18 in the next two sets to drop the match 3-0.
In the loss, Braley Dickerson had four kills and three blocks, Layton Nowell had three kills and three blocks and Chloe Hillyer had three kills as well.
On Tuesday, it was total domination for the Lady Pats last week. The team drove up to Hillcrest in Jackson and made quick work of the Lady Cougars with a straight-sets victory in which WA didn’t give up double digit points in a single set – 25-5, 25-6 and 25-8.
Leading the way in the victory was Nowell with seven kills and Dickerson with five kills and four aces. Hillyer finished with 10 aces and two digs, Maggie Burns had 11 assists and seven aces and Emma Grace Loper had eight assists.
WA entered the week at 8-9 as the team continues to battle out, quite possibly, the most difficult schedule in the MAIS. The team kept the difficulty going on Tuesday with a matchup with Simpson on the road and they hosted Lamar School on Thursday in two ball games that happened after press time.
Fans can see the team on Senior Night next Monday against Heritage Academy at 6 p.m., and WA will be on the road at Pillow Academy on Tuesday.
