After a string of 11 wins in 12 games, the Lady Eagles of Eupora hit a bit of a skid in softball last week.
Eupora had a two-game set with the Union Lady Yellow Jackets as Class 2A, Region 4 play continued.
Union came to Webster county on Tuesday night for the first matchup between the two teams and broke the game open with six runs in the fifth inning to do the damage needed in order to grab a 6-2 win. Eupora had a 1-0 lead in the first inning but couldn’t score again until the bottom of that fifth when the lead had been grabbed by the Lady Yellow Jackets.
Three errors and eight walks were detrimental to the Lady Eagles in this game as Belle Tedder had thrown a dominant first 4.0 innings but couldn’t make it out of that frame. Tedder surrendered eight hits in the game and five runs but only two of those were earned. She struck out six batters and walked two.
Bella White came in for relief and threw the final 3.0 innings with three hits, one unearned run, six walks and three strikeouts.
The Lady Eagles weren’t able to put a whole lot of pressure on Union offensively, either. Eupora finished with just four hits and had four walks with seven strikeouts.
Game two was an offensive struggle with the two teams combining for just five hits. With Eupora again staying in the fight most of the way, it was a four-run sixth inning that would be the culprit of a 6-0 shutout.
White started the game and threw 5.1 innings with three hits, six runs, four earned runs, four walks and 11 strikeouts as she allowed just one hit and two walks in the first 5.0 frames.
Only three base runners reached for the Lady Eagles during the loss.
As tough as those losses were, there’s no time for Eupora to spend dwelling on them. The Lady Eagles had to get right back to work this week with a two-game set against the leaders of the division in Sebastopol.
Eupora (16-6, 3-2 Region 4) went on the road Tuesday, weather permitting, to play the Bobcats and were set to host them on Thursday night. The week will conclude on Friday night as Eupora travels to Pontotoc for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
Next week is a busy schedule for the Lady Eagles as well with road trips to Starkville and division opponent J.Z. George (double-header) on Monday and Tuesday respectively and a home game against Houston on Thursday night.
