An early season showdown between rivals on the softball field did not disappoint on Monday night.
Eupora hosted the Choctaw County Chargers in a masterclass pitchers’ duel between CCHS’ Presley Scarbrough and the Lady Eagles’ 8th grader Belle Tedder. The home team’s hurler threw 6.0 scoreless frames before the Lady Chargers were able to break through late and find a way to win in a 3-1 thriller.
The win was the first for coach and Eupora graduate Collin Brister who took over just weeks ago after head coach Brooke Steele stepped away from coaching.
A two-out RBI single from Britlee Telano tied the game in the sixth inning and Madelyn Sanders got the lead in the seventh with her two-run double to get the victory.
Prior to the sixth frame, Tedder had surrendered just four hits and no runs while walking two batters and striking out 11 as she continues a strong start to the season in the circle for Eupora.
The winning pitcher was the veteran Scarbrough who managed to scatter six hits and surrender just one unearned run with a walk and seven strikeouts. Scarbrough also had a triple offensively. Lexi Patterson finished with a 2-for-4 night for CCHS (1-1) and a double while Sanders drove in the two runs on a double.
Bella White and Ansley Mason finished with two hits each.
Eupora fell to 4-2 but had won three-straight games by a combined 60-9. The Lady Eagles dropped the first game of the season to South Pontotoc 7-6.
The Lady Eagles played on the road at Winona on Tuesday and will be at Smithville on Friday at 2 p.m.
