It was a busy week for the Eupora Lady Eagles in softball and they earned the initial Class 2A, Region 2 win of Clay Grissom’s tenure.
That came last Monday when the Lady Eagles traveled to J.Z. George to take on the Lady Jaguars. It took just three innings to do the job for the Lady Eagles as Lindsey Turnipseed threw a no-hitter and the offense blasted 13 hits in an 18-0 win.
Eupora scored eight points in the first inning, six in the second and another four in the third inning to get the win. Seven players had a multi-base hit including home runs from Cydney Murphy and Anna Cummings. Murphy went 2-foe-3 with two RBI and Cummings also was 2-for-3 with three runs driven in during the win.
Maddie McMullan, Mackenzi Reed-Wood and Ally Bingham had two hits each with all three managing a double and McMullan and Reed-Wood knocking in three runs. Harper Doggett and Neelie Dillinger had a double as well.
Turnipseed continued her rise over the last few weeks by throwing all three innings, giving up just one base runner via a walk and striking out six batters.
Eupora kept things rolling on Tuesday when it hosted Water Valley at home and got a second-straight shutout. Doggett threw this game and scattered six hits with no walks and six strikeouts in a complete game shutout.
It was a 10-hit ball game for the Lady Eagles as they got three hits from Aubree Mason at the top of the order and she also had two RBI with a double. McMUllan had two more hits including a double and Murphy had two hits, two RBI and a double and triple in the win.
It was a tough outcome on Friday as Eupora went to the road to take on a good Vardaman club. Eupora scored four runs in the fourth inning to climb to within 5-4 but couldn’t score more in a 6-4 defeat to the Lady Rams.
Dillinger drove in two of those runs in the game but no one else had more than one RBI or one hit.
Hosting two ball games on Saturday, the Lady Eagles came up empty against Vicksburg and Cleveland Central. The Lady Gators had four errors and Eupora played clean, but nine hits proved to be big for the visitors.
Another close game went the other team’s way as Cleveland Central scored all five of its runs in the final two innings of a 5-4 game that was shortened to four innings. Eupora’s three errors loomed in that ball game as Doggett surrendered three earned runs with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Lady Eagles had eight hits with Mason notching three of those and Bingham two. Bingham also had a double in the game.
The 2-3 week dropped the Lady Eagles to 5-10 on the year and 1-2 in Region 2 play. Eupora was slated to play Calhoun City on Monday of this week on the road and will also go to Cumberland to play rival East Webster on Thursday. Eupora will host J.Z. George on Friday at 6 p.m.
