Last week might not look as productive on the surface for the Eupora Eagles, but it was a major step forward for the team and put a lot of other teams on notice.
The Eagles took on Choctaw County in two ball games with Class 2A, Region 2 implications and came away with two losses. One of those losses turned into a rout, but doesn’t tell the story of the competitiveness shown by the Eagles.
In game one of the two-game set, Eupora hosted the rival Chargers and had them on the ropes. The Eagles gave up four hits and had nine of their own, but defense couldn’t play clean. Four errors and five walks claimed a win from Eupora and the Chargers would take a tough 4-2 victory.
Hunter Dorroh and Ames Conrad led the team with two hits each and Conrad had a double. But the lack of big hits would loom large and Choctaw County wouldn’t walk anyone as Alex Telano threw strikes.
The two teams met again on Friday night at Eupora and were neck and neck early. Heading into the fourth inning, it was a 3-3 ball game. That’s when the wheels came off for the Eagles with 12 runs coming across for the Chargers and that led to a 15-4 loss in five innings.
That was a tough pill to swallow for the Eagles, but they would bounce back on Saturday. Playing Louisville at home, Eupora rolled 16-1 to one of its largest wins of the season.
The Eagles are 5-18 on the season but are still within striking distance in district play. Two big games are on the way this week as the Eagles take on rival East Webster twice. Game one of the two-game set was Tuesday night with game two at Cumberland on Thursday at 7 p.m.
The team wraps up the regular season on Saturday at Noon by playing Water Valley.
