After getting a big first Class 2A, Region 2 win earlier in the week against Nanih Waiya, the East Webster Wolverines and the Warriors did battle again later in the week on Friday.
The Wolverines got a little more distance this time around when they traveled down to Winston county. EWHS scored four runs in the fourth inning to build a lead and would hold off a late rally from Nanih Waiya to win 9-5.
Pitcher Kaiden Simmons pitched a strong ball game going 6.1 innings, allowing four hits, four runs, three earned, while walking five batters and striking out 13. Kaleb Warnock came in and pitched the final two outs giving up one earned run in the win.
The Wolverines got out to a 2-0 lead in the second before Nanih Waiya tied it up in the bottom of the second frame but EWHS was able to take control of the game in the middle innings. The Wolverines scored four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to jump out to a 8-2 lead. They got another in the seventh to build that lead out to seven runs.
Nanih Waiya was able to get three runs across in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to get back in it.
Chandler Hodges had a 3-for-4 night scoring three runs and driving in another. Briceton Johnson, Hastings Gibson and Kainan Reed all had two RBI. Reed had a triple in the game, Hodges, Gibson and Johnson all had doubles and Johnson also hit his first home run of the season. The Wolverines improved to 7-2 on the season and 2-0 in Region 2 play and now prepare for Spring Break. It won’t be a break in the action for EWHS as the team will travel down to Decatur and East Central Community College to go up against a couple of Academy teams.
EWHS will play Leake Academy at Noon on Wednesday and will follow that up with a matchup with Winston Academy at 4 p.m.
