The Grace Christian Basketball teams both claimed wins over French Camp last week, however both took losses to Columbus Christian. GCS will take on Starkville Christian on Tuesday, before hosting Nanih Waiya on Thursday.
Eagles: The Eagles started their week with a 66-46 loss to Columbus Christian. Eagles Head Coach Charles Heard said his team could not get the shots to fall. “We played great defensively, we just couldn’t put points on the board,” he said.
Miles Brownlee finished the game with 14 points, while Jon Martin Turnipseed added 10. Jack Butler also scored 10 points, while Braden Joy added six. Bobby Culwell and Max Peterson both scored four points. The Eagles then claimed a big 59-48 win over French Camp Academy.
“We played with composer and great heart,” Heard said. Heard said things did not look good for the Eagles at first, however they were able to keep their composure, settle down and get the win. Heard did say he thought his team could have done a better job taking care of the ball, as well as getting back on defense and finding their man in transition. Overall, Heard was pleased with his team’s performance.
Brownlee led scoring with 21, while Chase Allman added 13. Butler, Joy, Turnipseed, and Culwell all added six points apiece. Heard said he liked seeing his team play with as much heart as they did last week.
Lady Eagles: The Lady Eagles started their week the same way, with a 32-22 loss to CCA. Head Coach Talor Troyer said the Lady Eagles struggled. “We were slow defensively and couldn’t get a shot to fall,” she said. Troyer said the Lady Eagles stuck with it and were able to outscore CCA in the fourth, but it was too little too late. Mia Brownlee led scoring with nine points. On Thursday, the Lady Eagles claimed a 39-26 win over French Camp.
“Honestly, we won this game by playing really great intense defense, until our offense caught up. The Lady Eagles had a big third quarter, hitting four three pointers in the quarter and pulling ahead by 20 at one point. “We let them have too many opportunities in the fourth to score that brought them within 13 points of us,”
Troyer said. Anna Rose Eaves led scoring with 14 points, while Thea Blaire added nine. Troyer said the bench stepped up big for the Lady Eagles when a few starters got in foul trouble.
