Recently the coaches in Region 4-3A met and the Chargers walked away with several honors. Several Chargers were named to the Super 22 and All Division teams, and the Chargers walked away with the honor of Player of the Year and Coaching Staff of the Year.
This year’s 2023 Region 4-3A Player of the Year is Kenyauta “KJ” Cork. The Sophomore quarterback showed improvement from his Freshman year to this year. Cork was more composed, more attentive and shows his knowledge of the game is steadily increasing.
This year, Cork completed 136 of 196 passes with a 69.4 percent completion rate, he threw for 2,025 yards, 26 touchdowns and had 10 rushing touchdowns. Cork also set the school record for the most passes and touchdowns in a season.
Peyton Thomas, Hunter Holland Jae’Din Thames, Jaquan Lewis, Caleb Cunningham, Jeramiah Miller, Chancen Mosley and Ben’jarvius Shumaker were all named to the Super 22 Regional team. Thomas and Holland helped to lead the way for 2,605 and was a part of an offensive line that gave up only three sacks.
Holland also took on the role as the kicker for the Chargers and played a role on defense as well.
Thames was strong on defense leading with 32 solo tackles, 46 assisted tackles and 76 tackles total.
Lewis had 13 assisted tackles, 12 solo tackles, 25 tackles total and three interceptions.
Cunningham had another standout year, compared to last year where he didn’t get the ball as much. This year, Cunningham had 48 receptions for 1,138 yards and 14 touchdowns. Cunningham also set the school record for the most catches and receiving yards in a season.
Another standout this year was Sophomore Jeramiah Miller. Recently invited to the Magnolia Sports Super Sophomore game, Miller was another Charger that improved from last year. This year, Miller had 154 carries for 1,501 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Mosley was another one that made you gravitate toward him. With only nine catches for 200 yards and three touchdowns, the Junior came in clutch for the Chargers when they needed him most.
But the standout this year is Freshman Defensive Tackle Ben’Jarvius Shumaker. Although, listed as a Sophomore on Scorebook Live and played like he was in his second year, not his first, the Freshman made headway and definitely put eyes on him.
As a freshman, Shumaker had 16 solo tackles, 37 assisted tackles, 53 total tackles and five sacks.
Jahiem Woodard, Tayshawn King, Zabaius Miller, Braxton Shumaker, Jordan Ashford, Jalon James, Chavez Sellers and Donovan Eiland were named to the All-District first team and Jack Hood, Quaysie Lane, Johnathan Ricardo, JJ Miller, Elmar Gladney and Javontaye Robinson were all named to All- District second team.
Among their honors, Cunningham was named to the 3A All State first team and Miller was named to the 3A All State second team.
Rounding out the honors, the Chargers Coaching Staff was named the Region 4-3A Coaching Staff of the Year. In his first year, Head Coach Dillon Mitchell and his staff took the Chargers to a 9-3 season, were the District Champions for Region 4-3A and went to the second round that came down to a battle between the Chargers and Amanda Elzy.
