The Lady Chargers have had a roller coaster of a battle lately, but they’ve perservered and battled through it. Taking some tough losses but still holding strong in district, despite a few battles.
Currently, according to Scorebook Live, the Lady Chargers are in the third spot in the district behind Nettleton, who they broke even with on a 1-1 split and East Webster, who they face to close out their season.
The rollercoaster began during the week of Spring Break against Calhoun City when they walked away with a 2-1 win. The Lady Chargers got on the board in the bottom of the second inning, with the Lady Wildcats answering at the top of the third.
But, a score in the bottom of the sixth sealed the deal for the Lady Chargers to take the win. Mary Claire Salley had two RBIs and Junior Presley Scarbrough was on the mound for the Lady Chargers pitching all six innings. Scarbrough struck out 12, had three hits and one run.
They then faced a two game series with Nettleton and a two games series with Mooreville with a game against Houston in between.
The Lady Chargers took a 3-0 win against Nettleton at the first meet up at the Glass. They had a big bottom of the fourth as Scarbrough and Simmons Brooks brought in Atleigh Hollingsworth, Salley and Abby Newlin.
That would be the end of the scores as the two faced seven rounds with five and a half [the top of the seventh] all ended in shutout innings.
Scarbrough pitched all seven innings. She had eight hitters, no scores and 11 strikeouts.
In the second matchup, Nettleton sung a very different tune. Nettleton came out swinging getting in two runs in the first innings and three in the third.
The Lady Chargers attempted to fight back with a huge rally at the top of the fifth inning, and bringing in a run in the fourth inning.
But, couldn’t get anything moving in the top of the seventh to force the bottom and possibly an eighth inning.
Top of the fifth, the Lady Chargers began to come alive. After two walks, BB Ingram scarificed a bunt to advance Scarbrough and James. Following Ingram’s bunt, Sanders pulled a double on a line drive to center field bringing in Scarbrough. Patterson follows up with a grounder and James gets the score, and Newlin doubles on line drive to center, with Sanders scoring.
In the top of the sixth, James files out to center and after tagging up, Salley takes the Lady Chargers within tying up the game.
But, that was short lived.
Before facing Mooreville, the Lady Chargers take down the Lady Hilltoppers by one.
Salley began the Lady Chargers strong with a double, bringing in Brooks going up 1-1. The Lady Chargers answered in the bottom of the second with a single by Brooks, which led to James scoring. Houston ties up the score again the fourth.
Abby Newlin came up big for the Lady Chargers at the bottom of the fourth with a double bringing in Kasey Newlin and Patterson.
After two shutout innings, it came down to the bottom of the seventh in a tied up game with Kasey Newlin hitting a fly out to right and Scarbrough scoring off of a tag up.
Mooreville proved to be a battle for the Lady Chargers. In the first game of the series, the Lady Chargers fell to Mooreville by one, in the second game, it was by two.
All of the components were there, they just couldn’t get over the hump.
The Lady Chargers had a strong fourth in the first match up. But, Mooreville battled back to take the game in the bottom of the sixth.
In the top of the fourth, Abby Newlin kicked off a rally with a double. Hollingsworth followed with a fly to right bringing in Sanders and Newlin. Salley singles to shortstop bringing in Hollingsworth.
But, they couldn’t hold off Mooreville, who took the win at the Glass.
In the second match up, it was another battle with the Lady Chargers having a strong bottom of the fifth inning, but Mooreville battled back with a rally in the top of the sixth to seal the deal and take back the lead.
And again, Moorevile walked away with the win, this time at home.
After falling to Mooreville, the Lady Chargers needed to bounce back and that exactly what they did against the Lady Cavaliers of Caledonia.
A rally in the sixth and a strong seventh gave the Lady Chargers the win. Brooks began the rally with a single bringing in James. James’s score got the Lady Chargers on the board 1-0.
In the seventh, they caught their momentum and they turned the game into their favor. Kicking off the rally was Scarbrough with a fly out and Sanders scoring after tagging up. James followed with a single with Salley scoring and advancing herself. Britlee Telano singles bringing in Hollingsworth. James and Telano steal home, making the score 6-0 and sealing the game.
