Shortly after 10 o’clock this past Sunday morning, Winston County Deputies Jody Garrard and Blake Sheets located the body of 70-year-old Melvin Sherrod in a pond on Loakfoma Road, near the Noxubee Refuge.
Sherrod had last been heard from at around 2 p.m. the previous Friday.
It was reported that Sherrod left home and went to another residence where he would often spend time at a pond, and was waiting for a friend to do some work on a tractor.
The friend arrived to find Sherrod’s truck with the driver-side door open and keys in the ignition, but no sign of him.
After a few hours, and unable to locate Sherrod, a call was placed to 9-1-1 which initiated the search involving Winston Sheriff’s Dept., Mississippi Game & Fish Rescue Team, all fire departments in Winston County, and community members.
The search covered a large area and was done on foot, on ATVs, with the Sheriff’s office drone and Mississippi Game & Fish drone.
By Sunday morning, Garrard and Sheets felt that Sherrod had to be nearby and made the decision to drag the pond, and discovered his body.
An autopsy has been ordered, but no results have been reported at this time.
