Two local teachers, Lavelle McAlpin and Chance Carden, have started a podcast that will cover topics of local, regional and Southern history.
The podcast is named “The Grateful Historians Podcast” and can be found by searching on iTunes, Spotify and a number of other hosting sources.
When asked, McAlpin said, “Our purpose is to tell stories with a positive vibe. This isn’t ideological; it is our attempt to share stories from Webster, Choctaw and surrounding counties along with Mississippi and regional Southern history.”
He continued, “Southerners have a long tradition of oral history — of family stories, colorful characters and local events. It was once done at the dinner table or on the front porch. There has been a loss of this in recent generations and we want to hold on to our stories of the past and our common experiences. The only difference is: we will be doing it electronically instead of face to face.”
The podcast began with two episodes on the history of Bennett Academy/Wood Junior College.
McAlpin concluded, “We plan to put a new podcast out every two weeks; and as long as our audience is tuning in, we will try and keep it up. We have book reviews, bank robberies, railroad stories, crime, murder and a host of local topics to explore.”
