So far this season, Eupora’s volleyball team sits at four wins, but it’s not indicative of the improvements the Lady Eagles have made in year two.
Taking last week’s first district ball game against Choctaw County for instance, the Lady Eagles were swept in straight sets against the Lady Chargers a year ago. It played out much differently for Meredith Woolbright’s team this season.
Eupora went back and forth with CCHS and took the match to five sets before falling in a 3-2 battle. The match was within the team’s grasp which is major progress against a program that has been on the courts for many years.
“It definitely shows the improvements that we made, but I told them in the locker room that we gave them 56 points out of 115 points. You’re not going to be successful giving a team 56 points,” Woolbright said. “They’re a good team, but I think us going to five sets shows that we’re just as good and can go toe-to-toe with them.”
It was a back and forth affair for the Lady Eagles losing the first set 25-14, winning the second 25-21, losing the third 25-20 and then getting to a decisive fifth set on a thrilling 27-25 win in set four. In the fifth, CCHS was able to pull away 15-11, but it was a fun night of volleyball for Eupora.
The Lady Eagles followed that up by dropping a tough matchup against Class 5A opponent Neshoba Central 3-0 on Thursday. The losses dropped the Lady Eagles to 4-10 on the season, but the games that matter the most are now making up the bulk of the rest of the schedule.
Eupora will play five district games over the course of the next three weeks starting with a match at Choctaw County on Tuesday night and at home against Nanih Waiya on Thursday.
East Webster
Across the county at East Webster, the Lady Wolverines are already off on the right foot in division play. EWHS lost to South Pontotoc last week 3-0 and bounced back with a win over Grenada 3-0 on Monday and Tuesday respectively before starting off the new week with a big first conference win against Nanih Waiya.
EWHS has won the last six sets that it has played as the Lady Wolverines followed up the straight-sets win over the Chargers with a 3-0 victory at home against the Warriors to start off this week. The team was scheduled to play Nanih Waiya again on Tuesday night in Winston county and will play CCHS on Thursday night at 6 p.m. with a chance to take over the lead in the division.
East Webster is currently 6-6 on the season with a 1-0 record in district play. The Lady Wolverines won six games all of last year during the first season of the program.
