Ready or not, Jon Ginns team is hitting its schedule full speed. East Webster had some games spread out early due to the lack of bodies prior to football season finishing with the Wolverines in the North State championship. Last week, the busiest part of the year hit with a vengeance as the Wolverines had to play four games in six days. With a group of players that havent had a whole lot of time to get in basketball shape and transition to a different game, it has made for some rusty play. Its nothing new for Ginn as hes seen it happen since he arrived in Cumberland, and it means the athletic programs are remaining healthy with a deep run into football postseason. We had four games and two practices. Its just the way that it falls, Ginn said. We know every year were going to be in a similar situation and unfortunately, we got our guys back on the week that we played a lot of games. We just have to muddle through and figure it out as we go. In the four-game week, it was a pretty good showing for a Wolverine team that is still trying to settle in before district play begins. EWHS went 4-1 with wins over French Camp Academy, South Pontotoc and Lafayette and the lone loss coming against Philadelphia. The Class 2A Tornadoes always seem to provide a good early season matchup with the Wolverines and they brought another one last week as EWHS went on the road. A double digit lead in the final quarter wasnt enough as the Wolverines fell late in a 45-44 game. We were up 10 in the fourth quarter and we just didnt close out, Ginn said. We were minus a couple of guys that didnt make the trip, but we should have won the game. We missed a few free throws and had some turnovers and then we fouled them too much in the fourth quarter. After EWHS gave up just 15 points in the first half, the Tornadoes came out and scored 16 alone in the third quarter. The Wolverines built a sixpoint advantage after three to 10 points but Philly would rally and outscore EWHS 14-7 in the fourth. Jer Kel Ivy had 15 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists while Dee Bingham scored 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Sam Brown led the team with 11 boards. EWHS bounced back last Friday when hosting South Pontotoc and finished the game with a 63-56 victory. Ivy led the way again with 16 points while Bingham had 11 points and seven rebounds. Prentiss Cork finished The East Webster Lady Wolverines Girls The girls team started the week in strong fashion with a 69-33 victory over FCA and 41-31 win Philadelphia, things went south. with 10 points and six rebounds. On Saturday, Ginn took his team to Oxford to take on Lafayette in a matchup against a Class 5A school and former EWHS assistant Hunter Mason. The Wolverines came away with a 52-42 victory and pulled away from a close game in the fourth quarter. Ivy finished with 23 points while Cork had 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. It capped two really good wins in a row after a tough Tuesday night. The thing I liked was that both of those teams were better than the Philly team that beat us. South had won six in a row with some nice wins. To get that one at this stage was really big for us, Ginn said. It was a good game against Lafayette because theyre physically bigger and more athletic than we are. That was a good win and a good test. EWHS moved to 5-3 on the year. over but In the final two games of the week, EWHS lost 51-39 to South Pontotoc and 4236 to Lafayette. It dropped EWHS to 5-4 on the young season. Both teams were back in action against Caledonia on Tuesday night and against rival Eupora on Thursday. They will each have a rematch against Philadelphia at home on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Next Thursday, the Lady Wolverines play at Louisville with a game at Saltillo on Friday at Saltillo at 6 p.m.
