District 15 Mississippi Senator Gary Jackson on Monday, June 1, 2020, announced his plans to retire from the legislature effective June 30, 2020, due to ongoing health problems. Jackson, Chairman of the Senate Municipalities Committee and a 17 year lawmaker, received an extended standing ovation after making the announcement at the well, following an earlier discussion with Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann. “Senator Jackson, in his most recent election, ran unopposed—there is a reason for that. He is not afraid to take a position or stand up for his constituents, but he has always done so in a way which is respectful and thoughtful while remaining a leader. His colleagues gave him a standing ovation today in the Mississippi Senate, and it was well deserved. We are grateful for his service to our State and we wish him the best in the future,” stated Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann. First elected in 2004, Senator Gary Jackson (R-French Camp) is the current Chairman of the Municipalities Committee and Vice Chairman of the Energy Committee. He represents District 15, which includes Choctaw, Montgomery, Oktibbeha, and Webster counties. Senator Jackson submitted his resignation to Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann today, June 1, 2020, effective June 30. The governor must call for an election no later than 30 days after a vacancy occurs in the state Legislature. No special election is held if the vacancy happens after June 1 in an election year. Therefore, the District 15 election is expected to be on the general election ballot in November. All qualifying deadlines are 30 days before the election.
