A local nonprofit spent Monday morning in Louisville helping some of the most vulnerable in the area. Prairie Opportunity Inc. Community Action Agency gave out food for the nonprofit’s elderly and disabled clients at its office on Columbus Avenue. Staff members gave out bags of chicken, canned tuna and vegetables, and bottles of water. About 25 bags of food were given away. This was the agency’s third food giveaway in the 8 county area. The agency is planning 5 more food distributions. Sandra Miller, Winston County Case Manager, noted that they have had an increase in request for services due to COVID-19. Debra Austin, Praire Opportunity assistant noted that all the staff for the agency enjoys helping those in need. “We love serving the community,” said Austin. Prairie Opportunity offers several assistance programs in the region. The organization, and its case workers, cover the counties of Choctaw, Clay, Lowndes, Noxubee, Oktibbeha, Webster, and Winston in Mississippi. While some of the aid is funded by the government, such as weatherization and the Emergency Food and Shelter program, other resources are overseen by the agency itself and receive funds through donations and local business partnerships.
