75 Years Ago – July 6, 1945 FRONT PAGE: OLD GLORY FLIES OVER BERLIN: The American flag was raised July 4th over the same bloodstained barracks square where Hitler enemies were purged in mass executions by the Gestapo 11 years earlier. - S/Sgt. Floyd D. Carr, son of Mr. and Mrs. George F. Carr, is presumed dead by the War Department, according to a letter to his parents. DEATHS: Funeral service for Miss Ella Hickman, 75, who died Saturday at a Meridian hospital, were held at the Baptist church in Noxapater, Rev. C. C. Weaver officiating. Miss Ella, as she was well-know, was born and reared here, the daughter of J. A and Sarah Rodgers Hickman, pioneers of the county. She spent practically her entire life here and was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. She is survived by four sisters, three brothers, and a large number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. - Services for Mr. John W. Rickles, 69, who died Thursday at his home in Greenville, were held at the Baptist Church in Noxapater, Rev. C. C. Weaver officiating, with interment in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Mr. Rickles was born and reared here and lived here for several years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bee Liddell Rickles, three daughters and four sons. - Funeral services for Mrs. Lee C. Dempsey, 76, were held at Center Ridge Methodist Church June 21, Rev. W. S. McAlilly officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Death came on June 20, following an illness of two years. She will be remembered as the former Miss Martha Victoria McQuirter. LOUISVILLE: Mr. J. E. Hollingsworth is sorry to announce to his friends that due to an illness, it has been necessary to resign from his position as salesman for the Graham Hardware Store. - Friends regret to hear that Mr. John Phagan was carried to the Missouri-Pacific hospital in St. Louis last week and hope for him a speedy recovery. - Friends of Mr. Ben Watson will be glad to hear he is improving after blood poison infection in his hand. - Friends of Ben McCully were happy to see him in town in his car this week. Hope he will soon be strong enough to walk on the streets and resume is old way of life. LOAKFOMA: Mrs. James C. Kinard and Freeda are visiting their parents and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Erastus Ivy at this writing. - Little Miss Merie Kinard is on the sick list. - Mrs. Minnie Jenkins if visiting her daughter in the Bond community this week. WEDDINGS: Mr. Frank Thomas Hall and Miss Maxine Carr were recently married, June 25. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hall of Macedonia and the bride is the charming sister of Mrs. John McLeod. ENON: Mrs. Charlie Woodruff has returned home from a visit with relatives in New Mexico. - Mr. and Mrs. Robert McLeod and family were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fulcher. - Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Woodruff and children spent Sunday afternoon in Noxapater. NOXAPATER: Jeff Barnes, Jr. returned to Seattle this week after spending his furlough here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Barnes. - The Daily Vacation Bible School, in progress this week at the Methodist church, is being well attended. - Mrs. Hughey Little and sons Hughey, Jr. and Billie, after a visit with their mother and grandmother, Mrs. Mattie Estes, left Saturday for their home in Knoxville, Tenn. - Mr. and Mrs. I. D. Darby and family of Philadelphia visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Darby Sunday. - Mrs. Annie Dunn has as her guest her daughter Mrs. Nicholson and her two sons, Bobby and Billy Allen of Meridian. Our friend Amelton Whitehead of the Ellison Ridge community, brought a might big tomato to our office Tuesday. It measured 7 inches long and weight 1 and 3-4 pounds.
