100 Years Ago – June 18, 1920 LOUISVILLE: Born, to Mr. and Mrs. O. B. Goza, a fine boy on the 9th inst. - Mesdames Kate and G. P. Woodward arrived home from Memphis Sunday, where they have been for the past week with Dr. G. P. Woodward, who recently underwent an operation, but is doing nicely at this present writing. - Mrs. J. P. Cagle arrived home from Helena, Ark. Monday after a pleasant visit to her daughter, Mrs. G. S. Lowe. She was accompanied home by her little grandson, Edwin Lowe. - We welcome Mr. and Mrs. Lewis and little son of Philadelphia, as citizens of our town. Mr. Lewis is now manager of the Bynn Yann store. - Mrs. Mary Metts was glad to have some of her children with her for a few days this week, John Metts, and Mrs. Bullock and little daughter of Greenwood. - Rev. J. M. Alexander, wife and three daughters, arrived here yesterday from Mansfield, Texas and are comfortably domiciled in the Presbyterian Manse. Mr. Alexander is the new pastor of the Presbyterian U. S. A. church, and our people extend him and his family a hearty welcome. MARRIAGES: On Saturday, June 5, Miss Elizabeth Sayer of New York was married to Henry Floyed Kennedy of Louisville, Miss. with the ceremony taking place at 1:30 p.m. at the home of the bride’s mother, Mrs. Mary A. Sayer, only the members of the immediate family being present, Rev. J. H. Bennett, pastor of the M. E. Church officiating. Mr. Kennedy is a veteran of the World War, 20th Engineers. The bride is a graduate of Syracuse University class of 1913, and is engaged in government work in Washington, D. C. The couple will make their home in Louisville. - A wedding of more than usual interest was consumated here yesterday when Miss Elizabeth Johnson of Watertown, Tenn. became the bride of Mr. Nola White of Nola, Miss. Miss Johnson has been in charge of the home demonstration work at Louisville. Mr. White’s son, R. P. White, is agricultural agent at Louisville. Mr. White recently made a hurried trip from Corpus Christi, Texas, to visit his children at Nola, Jackson, Yazoo City and Louisville, where he met Miss Johnson, and a “love at first sight” match was made. Mr. White is one of the best known and most successful business men of South Mississippi. Miss Johnson comes from one of the oldest and prominent families in Tennessee. - Mr. Gordon Bennett arrived in our city Saturday from Russellville, Ala., accompanied by his fair bride. He was married to Mrs. Adrienne Wilson June 9th and they are visiting the groom’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. E. Bennett. After the visit they will return to Russellville, where they will make their home. NOXAPATER: Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Fraser and Mrs. H. E. Hunt left Tuesday for Vicksburg, where they will enjoy the benefits from the splendid mineral wells for two weeks. - Mrs. C. C. Reed was called to Preston, Tuesday, by the illness of her father, Mr. Shepherd. - Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Lampley had as their guests the past Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Riley and Mr. and Mrs. Murry Pennington of Louisville, and Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Lampley and baby of Liberty. - Miss Gipsy Estes spent a few days this week with her sister, Mrs. Hardwick at Hight. SINGLETON: Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Avery spent Sunday with their old friends, Mr. and Mrs. Tom White. - The young people enjoyed a very pleasant meeting last night, greeting an old school friend, Miss Eunice Moorehead, and are looking forward to a lawn party to be given by the ladies in honor of Miss Moorehead. - We regret to learn of the illness of Mr. Howard Clearman, hoping he is soon convalesant. - Glad to say Mrs. Nora Parks’ health improving. 75 Years Ago – May 25, 1945 FRONT PAGE: Captured by six German tanks Dec. 3, 1944 and liberated April 14, 1945 by the same armored division with which he fought, Pvt. Henry Hill arrived home last Friday, May 18, 1945. His broad grin attests his true happiness – which words fail to express. DEATHS: Death came to Mrs. Roxie Haggard May 19, after an illness of several months, at the home of her sister, Mrs. R. L. Ward. Funeral services were held at Sardis Baptist church May 20, with burial in Sardis cemetery. Mrs. Haggard was born in Winston county April 16, 1874 and married Alonzo Haggard in 1888. She is survived by three sisters. - Services were held for Mrs. Addie Crow Wooten, daughter of Mr. S. H. and Polly Roebuck Crow, who passed away about midnight Sunday at the home of her nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Crow, with whom she had lived the past several years. Mrs. Wooten, the last member of a large family, died of old age, at the age of 100 years, nine months, and four days. Despite her age, she was strong, mentally and physically with plenty of vitality. Services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. C. C. Weaver, with burial in the church graveyard. She is survived by a large number of nephews and nieces. [The article included a photograph of Mrs. Wooten.] - Funeral services for Mr. Joe Alexander McGee, 71, were held at Poplar Flat Baptist church May 19, Rev. Moore of Carthage officiating, with burial in the church cemetery. Death came at the family home on the 18th due to a heart illness of several months. A native of Winston county, he was married to Miss Catherine Cockrell, who preceded him to the grave. He was a member of Evergreen church and is survived by two daughters, one sister, and grandchildren. LOUISVILLE: Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Ferguson and Mrs. William Hill and baby visited Mrs. Rudolph Woodruff in the Ellison Ridge community last week. - Miss Mary Alice Whitmire left for Atlanta, Ga. Wednesday night as she has been transferred by Southern Bell Telephone Co. - Friends of Miss Elaine Fulton are happy to hear that she is improving after an operation at Louisville Hospital Saturday. Her sisters Mrs. Cecil Long and Miss Ann Fulton of Philadelphia have visited her the past week. - Word has come to us that Ben McCully and Berlin Sharp, both of whom have undergone operations at Baptist hospital in Memphis, are getting along fine. WEDDINGS: A wedding which comes as a surprise to their friends took place Monday, May 21 when Miss Ruth Giffin, daughter of Mr. Howard Giffin and the late Mrs. Gladys Suber Giffin, became the wife of Sgt. Wallace Romedy, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Romedy of Ford community, at the home of Rev. Thad H. Ferrell. - Miss Jessie Chappell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Chappell of Bond community, and Sgt A. G. Moody, Jr, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Moody, Sr. of Fearn Springs, were married May16 at the home of Rev. W. L. Day. - Mr. and Mrs. H. V. McQuien announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Ruby Ethel, to Lt. Ralph Rittle of Memphis, May 16 in Memphis, where they will make their home. - The wedding of Miss Inez Moody, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Moody of Fearn Springs, and Sgt. Vance Boyles of Laurel was solemnized May18 at the home of the pastor, Rev. W. L. Day. - Miss Carolbel Milton and Marshall Chapman were united in marriage May 16 at the Baptist church, Rev. W. L. Day officiating. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Starkley Collins Milton and the late Mr. Milton of Carnden, Miss. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Chapman of South Church Street. The couple will make their home in Louisville. NOXAPATER: Mrs. Annie Pearl Triplett and Mrs. J. B. Land were shopping in Jackson Wednesday. - The Wall family, accompanied by Mrs. Sid Curtis, daughter Miss Cleo, and two friends from Meridian, enjoyed the week end on a camp at Choctaw Lake. There was a two-page spread with the photos and names of those servicemen “In Honor of Those Who Gave All.”
