100 Years Ago – June 4, 1920 LOUISVILLE: Mrs. M. B. Holmes left this week for her home in Mobile, after spending several months with her son, J. R. Holmes. - Mrs. A. W. Fox of Macon is the guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Webster. - Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Evans, a fine girl on June 3rd. - Mrs. Ellie Clark and little grandson, Jack Dempsey, are visiting relatives in Attala county. - Born, to Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Parks, on the 3rd inst., a fine girl. - Mr. H. Chadwick is up from Mobile on a visit to his old home county after several years absence. He will possibly move back to Winston in the near future. NEW OIL COMPANY: The Winston Oil Co. is the latest enterprise for our county, and was organized last week by home men, Dr. Walter Spiva and attorney. M. Livingston, who are now pushing the work of securing land leases, and informs us that as soon as sufficient land is leased, expert men will be put in the field and a hunt for oil will be made scientifically. MARRIAGES: On Saturday May 29th at the home of the bride’s parents, Rev. J. D. Simpson in Guntown, Mr. Thomas Dempsey and Miss Audry Simpson were united in marriage. Miss Simpson will be remembered here as the daughter of Rev. J. D. Simpson who was pastor of the Methodist church here three years ago. Mr. Dempsey is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Dempsey. NOXAPATER: Mrs. M. Pennington of Louisville was guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Lampley here Tuesday. - Mrs. C. D. Fulton of Rocky Hill community is guest of her mother, Mrs. F. G. Price. - Attorney J. H. Price of Indianola was over latter part of the past week to see his mother, Mrs. F. G. Price, who has been ill for some time and whom we are sorry to report not much improved. - Mrs. H. L. Lawrence has as her guests this week, her cousin, Miss Carrie Clark of Rose Bud, Texas and sister, Miss Retha Clark of Kosciusko. HINZE: We are sorry to note the illness of Mr. J. L. Edwards near Liberty. - Vaughny and Elzia Hines, Burris and Lois Taylor attended services at Rural Hill Sunday. - G. W. Hinze and wife made a business trip to Louisville Thursday. 75 Years Ago – May 11, 1945 FRONT PAGE: T/4 Therrell (Bill) M. Draper of Ackerman was killed in the line of duty February 22, 1945 in Western Germany. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Draper. - With highest honors, Miss Dora Dean Triplett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Triplett, is the Valedictorian with an average of 96 for the four years of High School and Mr. Neal Hurt, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Hurt, is the Salutatorian with an average if 90 for the four years of High School. - TROOPS TO BE SENT HOME SOON: All of the 3,500,000 American troops in Europe, with the exception of 400,000 garrison troops, will be withdrawn within a year. DEATHS: Funeral services were held for Mrs. J. A. (Elizabeth) Schoolar, 85 years old, May 8 at Murphy Creek Baptist Church, Rev. John F. Carter in charge. Mrs. Schoolar had been confined to bed for two and a half years due to goiter and arthritis, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. W. Tucker. She was a child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hampton Hurt of Winston county, and her father was killed in the Civil War. In 1877 she married Mr. John A. Schoolar. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, four sons, two brothers Jim, 97, and Tom, 90, thirty grandchildren and thirty-eight great-grandchildren. - Funeral services for Mr. Louis Ivy, 80, were held at Antioch Baptist Church May 5, with Rev. W. C. Kitchens in charge of the service. He died in a Memphis hospital after a week’s illness, and he had high blood pressure and had a stroke of paralysis. His wife, the former Miss Mary McKay, died before him. He is survived by two daughters and a sister, Mrs. Betha Kennedy. LOUISVILLE: Messers. Crumpton, Melton and Taylor are to be commended and congratulated on the great improvements on the buildings on North Church Street. They have made this street one of the nicest looking business streets in town and is a challenge to the other business streets in our fine little city. [Photographs of before and after included.] - Mrs. Freeman Cockrell visited her sister, Mrs. Floyd Hooks in Mobile last week. - James D. McCool of Baltimore, Md. arrived today for a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Linous Easterwood. - Mrs. R. L. Byrd and two children of Brookhaven are spending this week visiting with their parents and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Roberts. WEDDINGS: Miss Patty Sue Williams became the bride of Pfc. Thomas H. (Jack) Stubbs April 28, in a twilight ceremony in New Orleans. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Brown Williams of Philadelphia and her late husband. Pfc. Stubbs is the son of Mrs. B. E. Stubbs of Louisville and her late husband. - On May 2nd Miss Ersel Carter became the bride of Pfc. Horace O. Burkes, at the home of the groom’s parents, Rev. Ethel Beall officiating. The bride is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Carter of the Liberty community. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Burkes of the Zion community of Neshoba county. NOXAPATER: Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ming and daughter Peggy left this week for Philadelphia where he has accepted a place on the School faculty. - Mr. and Mrs. Grady McBrayer and children of Pascagoula are visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. McBrayer. - Mrs. Fannie Cagle of Louisville is spending the week with her sister, Mrs. Hattie Morgan, who has been quite ill for some time. - Mrs. Harold Webb and sons Henry and Jerry left Wednesday to visit Mrs. Webb’s mother, Mrs. Carter, and family in Marshall, Texas.
