100 Years Ago – March 26, 1920
LOUISVILLE: Dr. M. M. Ellis - Veterinary Surgeon - Office at Mills’ Stable - Residence and Office Phones No. 23. Calls answered at all hours. Louisville, Mississippi - Mrs. W. T. Reid and pretty little daughter Sarah, left last week for their home in Atlanta, Ga., after spending several days visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Butler. - Dr. Montgomery reports the arrival of a fine girl at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Barrett on the 14th inst. - Mrs. J. L. Davis has as her guest this week, her aunt, Mrs. Sallie Miller of Philadelphia. - Mrs. Frank Woodward is in Meridian this week having her eyes treated. She was accompanied by her daughter Miss Nannie. - It required the entire side-walk for R. L. Metts last Monday morning. It is a boy, Robt. Lowry, Jr., who made his appearance Sunday night.
DEATHS: Mrs. W. A. Warner died at her home one and a half miles north of town last Sunday. Her remains were buried at Evergreen Church the following afternoon, Dr. Dorman conducting the funeral service. Mrs. Warner had suffered a relapse of pneumonia, but was thought to be doing well Sunday morning, but she died that afternoon during what the family thought to be a sound sleep. She leaves a husband and several devoted children.
MARRIAGES: Married, on March 21, at the residence of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Smith, Mr. Marion (Dock) Morehead and Miss Erie Smith in the presence of friends and relatives, J. D. Hill officiating. Mr. Morehead is a bright and clever young man, holding a good position in Noxubee county. - Mr. Jesse M. Varner and Miss Jennie White were quietly married at the home of the bride’s parents near Webster on Feb. 15, 1920, Rev. J. L. Ward officiating. The Journal joins their many friends in wishing them a happy and prosperous life. - Mr. Ernest Fox and Miss Annie C. Presley were quietly married Sunday morning. They are both popular young people of Fearn Springs.
NOXAPATER: Mrs. DeCell and little granddaughter, Frances Canada, of Raymond, are guests of the former’s daughter, Mrs. Thos. G. Hopkins. - There is some improvement in the condition of little Louise Woodall, who has been quite ill for the past week. - The many friends of Mrs. Curtis will be gratified to learn that she is somewhat improved from her serious condition of the past two weeks. - Rev. S. W. Roger’s friends will be happy to learn that he is improving from his illness of the past week. - Albert Lampley is at home this week from Mississippi College, Clinton, recuperating from an attack of appendicitis.
75 Years Ago – March 16, 1945
DEATHS: Funeral services were held Wednesday at Pisgah church for Mr. J. Elmer Keen, 77, who passed Tuesday, March 6 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Vest Ward. Rev. F. H. Miller conducted the services with burial in the church cemetery. Mr. Keen was born Feb. 8, 1868 and married Mary Elizabeth Franks, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. —- P. Franks. One daughter and his wife preceded him to the grave. He is survived by ten children and 25 grandchildren. - Funeral services were held for Mrs. Velma Triplett, 65, at Perkinsville Baptist Church March 12, Rev. R. D. Pearson of Macon in charge, with interment in the church cemetery. She suffered a stroke at the family residence March 8 and never recovered. She was born in Winston county, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Joseph R. Ferguson, married Tom Triplett, and they had five children. She is survived by three daughters, two sons, one sister, and two brothers. - Services were held at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church for Mr. James Henry Webb, 62, on Saturday morning. He had been in declining health for some time, but his sudden death was a shock to the family. He was born and raised in Plattsburg, but had lived in Louisville for many years. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, one son, three grandchildren, one brother and two sisters. Burial was in the church cemetery.
LOUISVILLE: W. G. Edwards returned today from a four-day school in Memphis at Frigidaire Service School. - Mr. and Mrs. William Rhodes and daughter Mary Anne moved to Mendenhall Tuesday. They visited their parents in Louisville this week. - Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Agent spent Sunday with their parents in the Ellison Ridge community. - Mrs. J. T. Pugh and daughter Anna Catherine left Thursday to visit Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Pugh in Jackson, Tenn.
WEDDINGS: Miss Alletta Stevens, daughter of Mrs. J. W. Stevens and her late husband, was married to Harold Broughton Lowe, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Loew of Pontotoc, at the Baptist parsonage, March 10, Rev. W. L. Day officiating.
NOXAPATER: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Clements and baby visited Dr. Clements and family in Pontotoc last week - Mrs. Bill Bennet and daughter Nancy visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Boswell Wednesday. - As Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Morris and their son Max Ellis, were returning home from Knoxville, Tenn., Saturday, they were involved in a serious automobile accident near Birmingham and were rushed to West End Hospital. Mrs. Morris, who they thought at first had a severe skull fracture, will be released in a few days. Mr. Morris will remain in the hospital for about five weeks. Their son was not seriously injured.
