NEWS FROM LONG AGO JULY 14, 1900 FROM THE ACKERMAN RECORD, VOL. 2, NUMBER 17 (CONTINUED) LOCALS AND PERSONALS: We regret to record the death of Mr. L. C. Woodward which occurred at his home about ten miles south of Ackerman, Winston County, July the 5th. Mr. Woodward was a member of one of the oldest and most prominent families of this section. He was a man of high order of intellect, of sterling integrity, cultured mind, courteous deportment, and withal a Christian gentleman. To his sorrowing relatives we extend our sympathy. There was an interesting baseball game played on the Ackerman Diamond Wednesday evening between the French Camp and Ackerman teams. The boys on both sides acquitted themselves with credit the Camp team coming out some ahead according to the report we have of it. Southworth as a candidate for Congress from the 4th Congressional district.; Rufus D. Prewitt, D. H. Buck, and E. B. Weaver as candidates for Tax Assessor of Choctaw county. LOCALS AND PERSONALS: Mr. Henry Coleman and wife visited Ackerman Wednesday. - W. A. Black of McCool visited his brother Mayor G. F. Black this week. - Will Hight, the finial and gifted editor of Winston County Journal was in town last Monday. - If you want to feel comfortable and pleasant this hot weather, get your soda water at the Blue Fount. - We learn that Dr. Alex Boyd, formerly of this county, died at his home in Mt. Calm, Texas, a few days ago of heart failure. That progressive young business man of Sturges, H. H. Barton, was in town Wednesday. He was accompanied by Bert Sims. - Mrs. W. T. Hung accompanied by Miss Cora, Ruth, and Lucille, is visiting relatives in Okalona, Columbus, and Tuscaloosa, Ala, at present. - We are requested to announce that the county school directors will meet in Ackerman July the 18th, and all the members of the county school board will govern themselves accordingly. - Last Thursday evening Marshall W. T. Webb poured upon the street 200 one-half pint bottles of “Old Crow,” which he had captured as contraband liquor and condemned by order of Mayor Black to be destroyed. There were some who stood by and mourned over the departed spirits as those who have no hope. We call your attention to the card of Dr. Snow found in this issue of our paper. It affords as pleasant to be absolutely safe and conscientious in recommending and commending Dr. Snow as first-class, up-to-date dental surgeon. He has had the advantages of the best training our country affords and is well-equipped and prepared to give satisfaction in all departments of his work. His office is over Adam’s store. The Lodge of Sorrow in memory of W. H. Tabor will be held at Bankston next Sunday, 22nd, as announced and has NOT been called in.
