NEWS FROM LONG AGO JULY 6, 1900 FROM THE ACKERMAN RECORD, VOL. 2, NUMBER 16 (CONTINUED) Just as we went to press that sunny-souled and well-to-do farmer Geo. Wise of Bywy handed us the cash for another year’s subscription. - In its proper place in today’s paper will be found the announcement of Mr. Rufus D. Prewitt as a candidate for Tax-Assessor, subject to the action of the Democratic party. Rufus served as deputy Assessor under his father and his knowledge of the requirements of the office well fit him for the position. He was recently appointed Assessor and he has made a most splendid record. He is a model young man in every respect and his worthiness and qualifications for the office cannot be questioned. If the people elect him as their Assessor, they will never have cause to regret their action as he will discharge his duties faithfully, intelligently, and conscientiously. There were interesting services at Lebanon, Wednesday, the 4th, the occasion being the erection and unveiling of a monument in memory of Hugh Collins, who was accidently killed at Mobile in 1898 while in camp. The company of which he was a member erected the tomb and the same was put in place by 13 soldier boys, representatives of the Birmingham Rifles. We understand there was quite a crowd at the grave and that the ceremonies were very impressive, especially the talk made by the Chaplain. It was our pleasure to have a call on Wednesday from Mr. John Reel, who is the most inventive genius we ever knew. He has had several inventions patented and now has filed for patents on a cutting colter band, it fastens the colter at each end of the beam and when tightened never comes loose; a combination lap-ring lock used on plow stocks, wagons or anything you want locked and used with a staple; also a lap-link used for log chains and etc. Mr. Reel showed us the models of these three inventions and we know no three articles of more practical utility on the farm or the home than these. If anyone wants to engage in a paying business, he will do well to secure rights to territory, some of Mr. Reel’s inventions as he has the best articles on the market beyond question.
