Members of Old Choctaw County, the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, were invited to the Mississippi Governor’s Mansion where they met Elee Reeves.
The Mississippi DAR held their annual state conference Feb. 20-22 in Jackson. Those in attendance received an invitation from Reeves, the first lady of Mississippi, to tour the Governor’s Mansion.
The Mississippi Governor’s Mansion opened in 1839 and was first occupied in 1842. It is the second oldest continuously occupied governor’s residence in the United States. In 1975, it was designated a National Historic Landmark.
The Daughters of the American Revolution organization was founded in 1890 with the mission of promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism.
“We are all about God, home and country!” says Beth Duncan, regent of the local chapter.
Any woman 18 years or older who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible to join. Contact Sheila Fondren at 258-6522 for information about becoming a member of the local DAR chapter.
