The number of cases of COVID-19 in the county has more than doubled since last week, now totaling a dozen.
Webster County had 12 confirmed cases as of Monday morning with test results from the previous day, according to the Mississippi State Department of Health. The number of local cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, is up from five a week earlier.
No new coronavirus deaths have been reported in the county since the first reported by MSDH on March 25. The victim was a man age 65-70 with underlying health conditions who died while in hospitalization.
The total of Mississippi’s cases since March 11 stood at 1,738, with 51 deaths as of Monday.
Around 40 coronavirus cases have been identified in long-term care facilities across the state, but none in Webster County as of Monday, according to MSDH statistics. Because this group of older adults is much more vulnerable to severe illness and death from coronavirus infection, even a single case among residents or staff begins an outbreak investigation and diseases control measures among close contacts of those involved, according to the agency.
Total statewide COVID-19 testing figures as of Sunday are now also available. MSDH, the University of Mississippi Medical Center and commercial laboratories have performed 20,370 tests of Mississippians since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak.
