Winston Academy hosted its yearly Christmas program in the school gymnasium this past Friday. Under the direction of Mrs. Brenda Hunt, students from grades K3 – high school participated.
The program began with a welcome message from Bear Lowery, Barre Turner, Judah Sims, Lena Manning, and MacKenzie Blackwell. Next, the K3 group, with the assistance of Mrs. Mary Margaret Robbins, performed a darling rendition of “Jesus Loves Us” and “This Little Light of Mine.” Soloists from the age group included Mamie Davis, who sang “Jesus Loves Me,” and Porter Sullivan, who sang “The B-I-B-L-E.”
Next up, the K4 and K5 groups sang three numbers, including “Up on the Housetop” and “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” The K4 and K5 age groups also featured two soloists. Camryn Joy Williams sang “O Come All Ye Faithful,” while Rivers Caldecott sang “He’s Got the Whole World.”
The first and second grades combined to play “Santa Clause is Coming to Town” and “Jingle Bells” on the kazoo with Mrs. Hunt accompanying them. During this portion of the program, two different groups sang specials. Ada Matzek, Layla Holley, and Cadence Long sang “O Christmas Tree” while “Rylee Scrivener, Sadie Brown, and Kate Massey sang “Friendly Beasts.”
Using the resonator bells, the third-grade group entertained with their version of “Silent Night” and “Joy to the World.” Within this group, a “special group” utilized handbells to play “Jingle Bell Rock.” The special group members included Riggs hatcher, Lena Manning, Max Davis, Anniston Williams, MacKenzie Blackwell, Mary Clayton Chancellor, Cayden Crowson, and Bear Lowrey.
Sixth grader Trent Cooper performed “O Holy Night” as a soloist, and Adrianna Ornelas and Lena Smith followed Cooper with “Away in a Manger.”
A fifth-graders then performed a dance routine to “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree;” the group included Lynnlee Cefalu, Caroline Davis, Zoe Ross, Brooke Gordey, Aubrey McAdory, Mollie McAdory, Lani Stokes, and Carly Weeks.
The sixth-grade group was the final group by grade to perform, with students Mary Flynn Yates, Lillie Watson, Edie Miles, McKenna Long, Halle Kate Nagel, and Presley Scrivener performing a reading in which they described what was most important to them this time of year is.
A few sixth graders played the drums while the group sang “Drummer Boy.”
Group members from the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades played the recorder to songs “Charlie Brown Christmas” and “Nutcracker Suite.”
Lola Goforth, Madison Brown, and Ariana Langford broke from the larger group to perform “Angels We Have Heard on High.”
At the end of the program, the entire group of children sang, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”
