It was a fruitful week for the East Webster Lady Wolverines as the team is trying to pick up some steam heading into the new year.
It happened for EWHS last season as the squad got on a roll and ended up winning Class 2A, Region 2 in the regular season and the Lady Wolverines took a positive step towards doing the same with wins over Philadelphia and Eupora.
The Lady Tornadoes were victims of EWHS just a week prior at the East Webster Shootout and things didn’t get any better for the home team this time as the Lady Wolverines returned a trip. Jon Ginn’s team came out in the first half and held Philly under 10 points in both the first and second quarters on the way to a 64-38 blowout win.
It was a 22-9 start to the game by EWHS and the team would go into the locker room leading 38-15. EWHS held Philly to 26% shooting while hitting 43% of its own shots. The team also turned over the Lady Tornadoes an amazing 44 times.
Shameriah Culpepper led the Lady Wolverines with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting while bringing down nine rebounds. Shan Culpepper had 15 points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, Da’nasia Logan had 14 points and Lauren Graves finished with 12 points. Logan and Graves each had six steals as well.
In similar fashion, EWHS routed Eupora 50-16 later in the week. It was a second and third quarter to remember for the Lady Wolverines as they outscored the Lady Eagles 28-2 to secure the win. That came after a tough first quarter for both teams in which EWHS was clinging to a 10-9 lead.
Eupora shot just 16% in the loss as EWHS turned them over 33 times and outrebounded them 45-24. Shameriah had another big game scoring 23 points, hauling in six rebounds and grabbing four steals. Shan was strong again as well with her 16 points, 16 rebounds and eight steals coming just shy of a triple-double. Lauren Graves filled up the stat sheet as well with eight rebounds, eight assists and seven steals.
The two wins improved EWHS to 8-4 on the young season and the Lady Wolverines have won five of the last six games. The team played Okolona on Monday, Ethel on Tuesday and host Choctaw County on Friday night with the girls game starting around 6 p.m.
Boys
A couple of weeks ago when East Webster hosted Philadelphia in the East Webster Shootout, the Wolverines had to withstand a furious comeback from the Tornadoes but came away with a win.
This time, Philly used the momentum they gathered late in that ball game and took control from start to finish.
After a close first half between the two teams, the Tornadoes shut down the Wolverines in the second half on the way to a 55-34 victory. Philly shot 47% from the field in the game while EWHS managed just 30%.25 points off of turnovers was also a key in the game as the Wolverines could only score eight points on 20 turnovers from Philly.
EWHS was also outrebounded badly with a 39-21 disadvantage there as the Tornadoes corralled 19 offensive boards. Chandler Hodges was the only player in double figures as the senior scored 12 points and had seven rebounds.
There was a bounce back from the Wolverines on Thursday night against rival Eupora. EWHS put up 23 points in the first quarter alone to take control and didn’t look back as they were able to roll 67-43.
After scoring just eight points on turnovers the previous game, the Wolverines took advantage this time. On 28 Eupora turnovers, EWHS scored 26 points and the Wolverines had 56 points in the paint in the victory. Omarion O’briant had 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting with seven rebounds, Cade Morrow finished with 13 points on 6-of-9 and Blake Slay had 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
The win moved the boys squad to 3-8 on the season ahead of this week’s games.
