History was made at Choctaw Central last Friday night when the Lady Wildcats traveled up Highway 15 to Choctaw, MS.
LHS had never defeated the dominant Lady Warriors program in women’s basketball over the course of the long history of both schools.
In recent years, LHS had put up a fight against one of the state’s winningest programs, but couldn’t get over the hump. That included earlier this season when the Lady Wildcats were an eyelash away to an upset in a 61-60 ball game.
On Friday night, all of that changed as LHS pulled off the upset win and took care of the Lady Warriors 63-57 on the road in an exciting win. It was the first loss for Choctaw Central in Class 4A, Region 4 play this season and the first loss since they dropped a game to Neshoba Central way back in November. The Lady Warriors had won 13-consecutive ball games.
The win locked up the No. 2 seed in the Region 4 tournament for the Lady Wildcats as they now move into postseason play. The team will play at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Kosciusko against the winner of the Lady Whippets and West Lauderdale. Kosciusko and West Lauderdale played Tuesday night.
It would take just one win for LHS to get into the finals of the tournament and the Lady Wildcats have secured a spot in the 4A playoffs with that second place finish in the regular season. The consolation game is at 4 p.m. on Friday with a championship at 7.
The LHS boys finished last in Region 4 after dropping a 71-47 ball game to the No. 2 seeded Warriors. The Wildcats will be playing the late game on Tuesday night at Kosciusko taking on West Lauderdale at 8:30 p.m. A win would get the Wildcats to the semifinal game and rematch with the Warriors at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday night.
