The National Weather Service in Jackson confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down in Northwestern Winston County and tracked 5.2 miles, with a 300-yard max width and 90 miles per hour into Southern Choctaw County, just over the Choctaw-Winston County lines. This occurred Tuesday, November 29.
Dillon Cates with the Choctaw County Sheriff's Department told Matt Laubhan with WTVA Weather in Tupelo that a tree fell onto a home in the Sherwood Community. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency reports that six homes in Choctaw County received damage during the storm that lasted over several hours.
The Choctaw County School District delayed the start of school for two hours on Wednesday, November 30, due to the damage sustained in Sherwood. As of press time, the National Weather Service had not confirmed if there was a tornado that touched down in the area or if it was a straight-line wind that caused the damage.
The National Weather Service has confirmed a second tornado that hit the Sherwood area of the county. According to the preliminary damage survey, an EF-1 tornado hit the community Tuesday, November 29, at 5:11 p.m. and stayed on the ground until 5:21 p.m.
The tornado peaked at 90 miles per hour, was six miles long, and had a width of 330 yards. The tornado crossed the Natchez Trace Parkway and stopped just short of crossing the Oktibbeha County line.
Clean up efforts are ongoing in Choctaw County.
