The Maben Home and Garden Club has chosen the home of Linda Sue Crowley on Hatcher Road, South of Maben as the Yard of the Month for October 2022. The accompanying photo of the Crowley home does not show the plants that line the driveway to the right, but there are several purple crepe myrtles, a Chinese snowball bush and a limelight hydrangea.
On the opposite side of the driveway are several forsythia and althea bushes as well as lantana plantings. Across the front are alternating light green sunshine ligustrum and purplish loropetalum. Near the front door are several large knock-out rose bushes, and along the right front is a large rose-colored camellia bush.
In the patio area is a bed of rose bushes that were grown and given to the Crowleys by her late husband Larry's mother. Linda Sue was married to Larry Crowley, who died several years ago. He was a supervisor for Webster County. This bed also features fuschia-colored encore azaleas. The patio area is accented by an arrangement of silk sunflowers on the table and a handsome decorative pot of pansies near the post toward the pool.
Three hummingbird feeders are hanging from an overhead beam of the patio and a clematis growing up a light post nearby. The pool itself is an attractive and inviting place to relax and cool off on a warm seasonal day. Behind the spacious backyard is a large lake that offers a calming backdrop to the whole landscape with many trees to shield the property for privacy.
One of the most stunning plants in the yard to the left of the main house is the magnificent pampas grass plant. Linda Sue says that at the end of the growing season she just cuts it down and burns the stalks. The ash ensures that it will grow back to its lush height again the next year. Also along the east side of the house grow large Canna lilies.
Linda Sue enjoys her yard and does much of the trimming and mowing herself. She likes her time on the mower because she is able to be alone with her thoughts and away from routine interruptions.
Her industrious nature was revealed to us when she touched up the black paint on the frame of the Yard of the Month. She had been painting some of the black wrought-iron items around her home so she just put a much-needed coat of black paint on the sign frame while she was touching up her own things -- and we appreciate her for it. The Maben Home and Garden Club is excited to recognize this beautifully kept home and lawn as the Yard of the Month for October.
