The holiday season has arrived and local communities will have their Christmas parades within the next two weeks.
First up is Eupora’s, sponsored by the Eupora Rotary Club, at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. The theme is “A Classic Christmas” and Dr. Joe Duncan with serve as grand marshal.
Duncan earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Mississippi State University in 1975. In September 1976, while MSU’s veterinary college was being built, Duncan, who grew up in Memphis, began his veterinary studies at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville.
He was a member of the first class, which consisted of only 40 members who were all Tennessee residents. In 1979, following the completion of a three-year, year-round veterinary curriculum, Duncan received the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
Though he grew up in Memphis, Tenn., he returned to Mississippi, where he opened Duncan Veterinary Clinic in Eupora. His mixed practice provided experienced preventative, medical, surgical, dental, hospitalization and emergency care.
Duncan served terms on the Mississippi Veterinary Medical Association executive committee and as secretary-treasurer. After 43 years of practicing veterinary medicine, he retired in May.
Duncan and his wife, Beth, are members of the First Baptist Church in Eupora, where he teaches a Sunday school class at the Diversicare nursing home. The Duncans are active members of the community and both are proud alumni of Mississippi State University.
This year’s grand marshal thanks the residents of Webster County, and to all of his clients through the years he expresses his gratitude and appreciation for allowing him to serve as their veterinarian for over four decades.
