On Saturday November 22, the Louisville High School’s Chess Club participated and won this year’s Ambition Preparatory chess tournament. Members of the LHS Chess Club competed against Ambition Preparatory School’s Chess Club in Jackson, MS and several other Jackson area public and preparatory schools.
The tournament consisted of different matches that allowed the players to challenge each other. Each player gained a point every time they won a match and half a point for every tie. The tournament took place in the Ambition Prep cafeteria, starting at 9 am and going on until 1:30 pm.
LHS Chess Club Sponsor, Tremond Miller shared, “This is our second year as a club. For a lot of our members, it’s a first-time thing we’re doing. It’s cliche to say we are “young” but we’re just trying to get a sense of how to compete. I couldn’t be any prouder of the students we have here in Winston County”
Though the club mainly focuses on playing chess, he said that the club would also be open to teach chess to those interested.
“Chess Club is a place for students to think outside the box and be comfortable; it’s also where we can hang out and play,” Miller said. “This second year we have increased in size from 11 members in 2023 to 35 members across LHS, Eiland Middle and Louisville Elementary. I’m competitive, so I share with them that aspect but it’s a huge focus on learning. It’s not football or softball which is almost genetics here in Louisville, so we work hard to represent Louisville well at tournaments.”
The chess club has competed in two team tournaments this school year. He said they are excited to take part in other competitions and tournaments around the state. The sponsor said he is hopeful to be competing every month up until the State competition in March 2025. The chess club sponsor said that moving forward, the club also hopes to host a tournament against local high, junior high and elementary schools in the district.
