Pandemic continues A pandemic continues to impact our lives. We show concern for Texas, where the virus has hit especially hard in the Dallas and Houston areas. While the rate of infection is indeed high in Dallas County and Houston’s Harris County, few people realize that Webster County is being hit hard also. Take a look at your phone’s “The Weather Channel” to read the section “Track COVID-19” in your county and “Interactive Coronavirus Tracker.” The July 15 data shows the following: • Webster County, MS: 13.17 confirmed cases per 1,000 people • Harris County, TX: 11.57 confirmed cases per 1,000 people • Dallas County, TX: 14.74 confirmed cases per 1,000 people The populations are hugely different: Harris County 4 million, Dallas County 2 million, Webster County 10,000. Yet, small Webster County is experiencing the same rate of confirmed infection that these big cities are experiencing. What can we do to control the spread of COVID-19? Texas Gov. Greg Abbott revised the opening of Texas on July 3 so that face coverings are required by all individuals over the age of 10. Starkville, Columbus and West Point are all now requiring face coverings in businesses. A face mask protects the other person that you meet. Wearing a face mask shows that you care about that other person. If we cooperate in wearing face coverings, hopefully, this virus will be under control before our children and teachers begin school. Just wear the mask. Nancy Bagwell Eupora
