East Webster’s current run on the softball field shows a team that’s fully locked in on the assignment.
After winning the state championship last season with 21 wins in the last 22 games, the Lady Wolverines are on a similar path to close the regular season this year. EWHS has now won 11-straight ball games after taking out two teams last week and starting this week off with another. The latest was the Bruce Trojans who represented the last Class 2A, Region 4 matchup of the regular season.
EWHS was dominant last week starting the week off with Ethel. The Lady Wolverines scored in every inning but one and won the ball game 11-1 in six innings against the Lady Tigers. Ethel had hope in the first inning with a run in the opening frame but EWHS answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and kept piling them up while the pitching shut down Ethel the rest of the way.
The team had nine hits with Emma Jennings, Peyton Flora and Paytan Sanders all having two hits each. Jennings had three RBI and a double in the game. Faith Edwards also had a double in the win. Abby Williams was strong in the circle going all 6.0 innings with six hits, one run, one walk and four strikeouts.
On Thursday night, the Lady Wolverines locked up the district championship. EWHS fought through the wind and the rain hosting Calhoun City and used some late runs to push the game away and run rule the Lady Wildcats 17-7 in six innings.
After threatening to run rule early with a 9-1 lead after three innings, EWHS gave up a five spot in the fifth inning to close the game to 9-5. EWHS came through in the next two innings, however, to pull away and get the win.
It was an 11-hit night for the Lady Wolverines with three hits from Williams, a double and five RBI. Jennings, Flora and Keely Jo McKnight finished with two hits each. Jennings had two doubles and three RBI.
Sanders had two RBI in the win.
On Monday night of this week, the Lady Wolverines closed out the district part of the schedule going on the road to Bruce and for the first time in a while, EWHS had some pressure on them.
After going up 4-0 in the first inning, the Lady Wolverines were shut down for the next five frames and suddenly found themselves trailing 5-4 heading into the sixth. That was until every wheel on the Lady Trojans’ bus fell off.
Six errors, six hits and four other free bases opened the door for an incredible 15-run inning that took a lead for the Lady Trojans and turned it into a 19-5 run-rule loss. It was the 10th-straight game of 10 or more runs for EWHS.
There were almost more errors from the Lady Trojans than hits for EWHS. The Lady Wolverines had 13 base knocks in the game with three hits from Peyton Flora and two from Emma Jennings. Jasie Rae Flora, Katelee Box and Paytan Sanders had two RBI each in the game. Jasie Rae Flora and Box had a double each as well.
After Abby Williams pitched the first 3.0 innings and gave up five runs, Peyton Flora shut things down in the final 3.0 frames with one hit, one walk, no runs and two strikeouts.
With the victory, EWHS moved to 21-5 and finished conference play 8-0 for the second-straight year. On Tuesday, they played French Camp Academy on Senior Night and they traveled to Booneville on Thursday to close out the regular season.
