It’s district tournament time for the Louisville Wildcats as the two teams prepare to head to Greenwood this week for games.
The Lady Wildcats again finished as the No. 1 seed heading into the tournament as they capped the regular season with a 7-1 record. LHS (17-4) has had a great regular season thanks to some experience returning but head coach Mitchell McCurry needs even more from his squad this month.
“We had a lot of returning kids from last year’s team so we were able to use that experience in the regular season and it got us the No. 1 seed,” McCurry said. “We had a couple of slipups, but in the end we accomplished our first goal and hopefully we can learn from any mistakes.”
Among one of the slipups for the Lady Cats was a loss to Houston recently. The Lady Hilltoppers were able to come out on top and they showed LHS that it won’t be a walk in the park in the Class 4A, Region 3 tournament.
Those two would have to meet in Friday’s championship matchup (7 p.m.) and to get there, LHS still will have some work to do. The Lady Cats took on the winner of Caledonia and host Greenwood on Thursday night.
“I think we’re setup in a good matchup,” McCurry said. “We got the one seed and our first matchup will be against a team we played well against. The Kosciusko and Houston matchup will be a really good one and they both played us close this year, so if we were to be fortunate enough to win, we’ll have our hands full. Our girls are really excited for the challenge regardless who we play.”

Though LHS finished as the No. 4 seed and was just 2-5, opportunities were there for the Wildcats to get as high as the No. 2 seed last week.
LHS (5-13) lost five-straight games to finish out the regular season and lost three district games last week. It was a rough week for a Wildcat team that needed to have some good things happen heading into the district tournament.
The Region 3 tournament appears to be just about wide open as two through four have been competitive against each other this year. Kosciusko enters as the heavy favorite with their 21-3 mark this season and the Hiltoppers of Houston are the unquestioned last place team.
Houston was LHS’ first matchup of the tournament earlier in the week as the two teams played on Tuesday. A win matched up the Wildcats with the No. 1 Kosciusko on Thursday night with a championship set for Friday at 8:30 p.m. and the Consolation at 5:30 p.m.
“We’re not playing our best brand, but we know that anything can happen now,” McCurry said. “The difference between two and four is not very different. Kosciusko has been the favorite all year but we had a four-point game going into the fourth when we played. We have a great chance to make a run if we play well.”
