WINONA – French Camp girls dominated the CrossRoads Relays track meet, winning nine events and finishing with 135 points to 71 for runnerup Grenada. Choctaw County, with 55 points, Winona (44) and Eupora (14) also competed at the meet hosted by Winona.
“It was truly a team performance. This was a team victory” said coach Joe Watkins. “Almost every girl participated in four events. We were one of the smallest schools by numbers and yet we put up a comminating score.”
As a 1A school, French Camp is also the smallest classification of the five schools, competing against a 5A school, two 3A schools and a 2A school.
Ellen Ulerich, an eighth grader, led a one-two-three finish by the Lady Panthers in the 1600 and 3200, and ran on the winning 1600 and 3200 relay teams. She was followed across the finish line by Averie Jane Gundy and Lucy Littlejohn, second and third in the 1600, and Littlejohn and Olivia Surrette, second and third in the 3200. Ulerich's winning times were 6:14 and 14:24.
French Camp also took the top three places in the 800. Taylor Benoit was first with a time of 2:34, followed by Gundy and Littlejohn
Surrette, Gundy and Benoit were the other runners in both relays.
Benoit and Maddie Davis were double winners. Benoit finished first in the 400 and 800 (2:34). Davis won the 100 hurdles (19.61) and long jump (14-11) and was second in the 300 hurdles.
Jasmine Bonty won discus with a throw of 85-5½, was second in shot put and triple jump and seventh in the long jump. Lanie Greene was third in the 400, fourth in the high jump, sixth in the 100 and eighth in the 200. Olivia Gundy finished third in the high jump, sixth in the 300 hurdles and eighth in the long jump.
Boys
With only three competitors, French Camp boys won two event and finished fourth with 40 points. Winona and Grenada tied for first, each with 121 points, followed by Choctaw County (64), French Camp and Eupora (15).
Jesse Jones (12:32) and Nolan Burchfield (12:37) finished one-two in the 3200, and second and third in the 1600. Burchfield also finished fourth in the 800 and Jones was ninth in the long jump.
Silas Hodge won the discus (103-3½), was second in the 800, seventh in the 400 and eighth in the shot put.
French Camp competed at Starkville Tuesday. The Division 5-1A meet will be April 10 at Winona. Top four in each event move on to region meets.
