My granddaughter got a Fujifilm Instax Mini SE Instant Camera for Christmas. If you're unfamiliar with this camera, it's quite different from the old Instamatic I cherished in the '60s. This model is a modern take on the classic Polaroid, but even better. While her mom was setting it up, she asked Kenzie to pass her the film. Kiki, as we affectionately call her, turned around and started rummaging through the box and crumpled wrapping paper. Confused, she stood up and asked, “What’s film?” We all had a good laugh when we realized she had never encountered film before, highlighting how much we had assumed she knew.
It’s amazing how much things evolve over time, isn’t it? As we age, those memories often slip away, and we forget that our kids and grandkids might not even know about them. It leaves us curious about the insights our parents had that we might be missing.
This small moment brought to mind the pure innocence of our beloved grandchildren. So I ask you, what aspects of Christ do you understand that are still a mystery to them? What do you know about God's love for them that you haven't yet shared? Have you paused to explain the significance and purpose of His incredible grace, love, and mercy? Just like Kenzie’s encounter with film, they shouldn't have to wonder about these important truths.
This New Year, I encourage you to make a commitment to yourself and your family. Promise to dedicate time to talk about spiritual matters this year. Our children, including adult ones, and grandchildren often unknowingly invite discussions about scripture. They create opportunities for you to share valuable insights and wisdom. Stay alert for these moments, even in everyday situations, and seize them.
Never assume they know—teach them.
