Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith carried Webster County in her successful runoff bid for Senator.
Hyde-Smith won the U.S. Senate runoff with 54 percent of the vote to Democrat Mike Espy’s 46 percent on Nov. 7 statewide. She will finish the final two years of a term started by Republic Sen. Thad Cochran after being appointed to fill the vacancy created by his retirement.
Hyde-Smith captured nearly 52.32 percent of the vote in Winston County, according to unofficial final results with absentee and affidavit ballots.
Hyde-Smith also carried the county in the general election. Party labels did not appear on the ballot.
The county’s voter turnout for the runoff was nearly 57 percent.
“This is the best turnout for a runoff election in the county,” explained Winston County Circuit Clerk Kim Ming to the Winston County Board of Supervisors on Monday during a regular board meeting.
Of the 11,999 registered voters in the county 6813 voters turned out for the runoff.
