The Town of Weir Board of Aldermen meeting was a somber one as they remembered fellow longtime alderman Thomas Higgins, Sr. Higgins passed away on July 9, 2024 at his home. Mayor Glen Beard, Sr. said that Higgins would surely be missed by not only those on the board but in the town. “Thomas was a good man, a good man,” Beard said. Beard opened the meeting with prayer, praying for Higgins family, friends, the community and for the town to continue doing what’s best for the residents as they grieve the loss of Higgins. Higgins service was held on Friday, July 12 at noon at Weir Baptist Church. Visitation was held prior to service and burial was held in the Weir Cemetery. The board has yet to declare Higgins seat vacant, wanting to give it some time. But did name Doug Atkinson as mayor pro-tem, in the event Beard was not in town and City Clerk Cyndy Josey needed something done. A role that Higgins held for quite some time. As they powered on, as to not to be out of compliance for not holding their meeting on its scheduled day, the board discussed its ongoing Community Block Development Grant for the lagoon and receiving an extension on the project until December 31. Also, Chief Dillion Cates told the board the department was awarded a Homeland Security grant but as of right now, he doesn’t know how much they’ve been awarded and will know more by the board’s September monthly meeting. Beard and Josey also told the board to be thinking of the budget and things that they want to see done. “We’ll have to have a public meeting and by September 15 the budget must be done so by September’s board meeting everything has to be completed,” Josey said. The board: Approved a payment to SunCoast in the amount of $220,000 and Crowder Engineering in the amount of $14,000. Approved travel and reimbursement for Billy Joe Miller for wasterwater school. Approved to purchase Christmas decorations in the amount of $9,000. Alderwoman Vicky Carter said
