Jean Harper is a person who can be found working in various capacities across the county. She was born and raised here in Louisville. Living in Winston County, she worked in lots of places, but she would retire from TRW (where Polo Custom Products is now located) in 1998. Since then, Ms. Harper has kept busy helping others all over Winston County. Harper is active in her church and multiple civic organizations. She attends Mount Moriah M.B. Church in Louisville. She is an active member of the Kiwanis Club, Winston Strong, a Diabetes (support) Group, Winston County 4H, and the Winston County Self-Help Cooperative. However, many will know her for her work with the Winston County Farmer’s Market. Harper believes in serving others. “There’s always a need in our community. God has given everyone a mission to help serve mankind. Your purpose could be simple or challenging; however, you are obligated to help the less fortunate to sustain life.” Harper was instrumental in assisting with Winston Strong, established after the 2014 tornado. She made herself available to help in any capacity, met regularly with the members of the group, and volunteered to help in cleanup. Harper is known for her kindness, sweet smile, and her loving demeanor. Harper is a firm believer in providing a helping hand. “Life can be awkward and difficult at various junctions. These are the times we should offer support to help individuals and families to overcome their barriers.” She notes that her family has provided her with a wealth of support in all her endeavors. She is the mother of three adult sons, a fact she shares with pride. She adds that her work has actually helped her to realize just how important it is to give back. “My (support system) of friends, family and community allowed me to reposition for the betterment of (my) life. This is why I am committed to giving back to our community.” Working with those who need assistance, whether with those who needed help after the 2014 tornado and the July 2023 flooding, has shown her that part of her purpose is helping those around her. “Community service has raised my social awareness of children and senior citizens’ needs. We can find resolve and resolution to our community needs.” Harper adds, with emphasis, “We must get it done now.” Harper notes that her life hasn’t always been easy. “I have encountered personal issues and stumbling blocks along my path in life.” She adds that without the strong support of the community, her family, and her friends, she wouldn’t be where she is today. She can often be found working joyfully with a loving smile and words of encouragement for those around her. She enjoys all her work, whether it is volunteering with a civic organization or helping to coordinate the Farmers’ Market. Harper simply wants to do good in the community for as long as she can.
