With less than two weeks left until the local Distinguished Young Women, formerly Junior Miss program, participants and little sisters have been practicing on Sunday afternoons in preparation for the program.
Jordan Wood serves as choreographer, and this year’s Fiesta themed program will be held on March 17, 2018 at Ty Cobb Complex on the campus of Choctaw County High School. The five participants, along with Brookelyn Box, will be performing. Little Sisters will also be performing, and they are chosen by the participants to help with wardrobe changes, hair & makeup, and provide emotional support since parents aren’t allowed backstage during the production. This year, twelve little sisters will get to go behind-the-scenes and learn what DYW will be like if they choose to participate when they are in the 11th grade.
Having grown in the last few years, the Choctaw County Distinguished Young Woman Program, with the community’s assistance, has since been able to award over $12,000 in cash and college scholarships to local high school girls who want to further their education. The non-profit program’s goal is to honor young women and encourage them to obtain a college degree.
